They are not planets at all

Rahu and Ketu have no physical body. You cannot point a telescope at them. They are mathematical points, the two spots where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path, called the ecliptic.

When the Moon reaches one of these points at the same time as a new or full moon, you get an eclipse. That is all they are in astronomy: eclipse-causing intersections.

But in Vedic astrology, these two points carry enormous weight.

How Indian astronomers found them

The story of Rahu and Ketu comes from a myth about a demon who drank the nectar of immortality. Vishnu cut the demon in half. The head became Rahu. The tail became Ketu. They swallow the Sun and Moon during eclipses.

Behind the myth sits real observation. Indian astronomers tracked eclipses for thousands of years. They noticed the pattern repeats every 18 years and 11 days. They named the two invisible points responsible, gave them planetary status in the chart, and assigned each one a dasha of its own.

Rahu gets 18 years. Ketu gets 7. Together they account for 25 years of the 120-year Vimshottari dasha cycle. That is a big share for two dots that do not physically exist.

Rahu: the head without a body

Rahu is hunger without satisfaction. It obsesses, amplifies, and inflates whatever it touches in your chart.

  • In the 10th house, it can push you toward ambition and public recognition, sometimes at the cost of peace at home.
  • In the 7th house, it creates intense attraction in relationships but can also make you chase an idealised version of a partner instead of seeing who is actually there.
  • In the 2nd house, it makes money and status feel urgent, like there is never quite enough no matter how much comes in.

Rahu works through desire. Its dasha years often feel exciting and chaotic at the same time. People change careers, move countries, develop sudden interests, or get pulled into situations that feel bigger than their normal life.

The trap is mistaking the volume for the signal. Rahu is loud. It does not mean it is right.

Ketu: the body without a head

Ketu is the opposite. Where Rahu grasps, Ketu lets go. Where Rahu is obsessed with gaining, Ketu is already done.

  • In the 1st house, it can make you feel detached from your own identity, as if you are watching your life from outside.
  • In the 4th house, it brings a strange relationship with home. You may feel restless wherever you live, or not particularly attached to any one place.
  • In the 12th house, it pulls toward spiritual interests, isolation, or the feeling that material life is not the whole story.

Ketu's dasha years feel like stripping down. Things you thought mattered stop mattering. Relationships, jobs, possessions, or beliefs may fall away, not always because something went wrong, but because you outgrew them.

The difficulty is that Ketu takes things away before you have decided you are ready to let them go.

They always sit opposite each other

In every chart, Rahu and Ketu are exactly 180 degrees apart. If Rahu is in your 3rd house, Ketu is in your 9th. If Rahu is in your 6th, Ketu is in your 12th.

This creates an axis. One end pulls you toward new territory (Rahu's side). The other end asks you to release what you have already mastered (Ketu's side). The tension between the two is where a lot of life's friction and growth happen.

Understanding this axis in your chart tells you where your energy is being pulled and where you are being asked to surrender control.

Rahu-Ketu transit: every 18 months

Rahu and Ketu change signs roughly every 18 months. Unlike other planets, they move backwards through the zodiac. When they transit over sensitive points in your chart — your Moon sign, your lagna, your 7th house — events tend to feel sudden, fated, or out of your control.

Major life turns often coincide with Rahu-Ketu transits. Not because fate is pulling strings, but because these transits surface the exact desires and fears you have been ignoring.

How to find them in your chart

On Trunaksh, make your kundli and look for Rahu and Ketu in the chart. They will be in opposite houses. Then check your dasha timeline to see if you are in, or approaching, a Rahu or Ketu period. That will tell you whether this obsession-and-release axis is actively shaping your current chapter.
