The planet is not actually moving backwards

Retrograde is an optical illusion caused by orbits.

Picture two cars on a highway. You are in the faster car. As you overtake the slower one, for a moment it looks like the slower car is drifting backward relative to you. It is still going forward. Your perspective changed.

That is retrograde. Earth and the outer planet are both orbiting the Sun. When Earth catches up and passes by, the other planet appears to reverse direction for a few weeks or months. Then it "goes direct" again and resumes its normal path across the sky.

Every planet except the Sun and Moon goes retrograde at regular intervals. It is a normal, predictable part of how orbits work.

Which planets go retrograde and how often

  • Mercury goes retrograde about 3 times a year, for roughly 3 weeks each time. This is the one the internet panics about.
  • Venus goes retrograde about every 18 months, for about 40 days.
  • Mars goes retrograde about every 2 years, for about 2 months.
  • Jupiter goes retrograde once a year, for about 4 months.
  • Saturn goes retrograde once a year, for about 4 and a half months.

Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde. That is their natural motion. Nobody panics about that because it is permanent and not a news cycle.

What Vedic astrology actually says about retrograde

Western pop astrology treats retrograde as something going wrong. Mercury retrograde means your texts will be misread, your flights delayed, your contracts cursed.

Vedic astrology takes a different view. A retrograde planet is generally considered stronger, not weaker. The reasoning: a retrograde planet is at its closest approach to Earth. Closer means brighter, more visible, more potent.

The key difference is that retrograde turns the planet's energy inward. Instead of expressing outward in obvious ways, the planet works under the surface.

  • Mercury retrograde in a birth chart can make someone a deeper thinker, slower to speak but more precise when they do.
  • Jupiter retrograde can mean someone develops their own philosophy rather than following received wisdom.
  • Saturn retrograde can internalise discipline. The person holds themselves to high standards without needing external pressure.
  • Venus retrograde can create a private relationship with beauty, art, or love, one that does not need an audience.

Transit retrograde vs. birth chart retrograde

There is an important distinction.

Transit retrograde is when a planet is currently retrograde in the sky. This affects everyone. The advice here is simple: it is a better time to review, revise, and reconsider than to launch brand-new things. Not because the universe is punishing you, but because the planet's energy is pointed inward, which makes reflection easier and bold external moves slightly harder.

Birth chart retrograde is when a planet was retrograde at the moment you were born. This is a permanent feature of your kundli and says something about how that planet expresses itself throughout your life.

About 20% of people have Mercury retrograde in their birth chart. About 35-40% have Jupiter or Saturn retrograde. It is common. It is not a defect.

Mercury retrograde is not a catastrophe

The internet has turned Mercury retrograde into a meme. Your ex texts you. Your laptop dies. Your Amazon order goes to the wrong address.

Here is the reality: Mercury goes retrograde three times a year, three weeks each time. That means Mercury is retrograde for about 9 weeks out of 52. If retrograde really caused chaos, 17% of all weeks would be disasters. They are not.

What Mercury retrograde actually suggests is: slow down before hitting send. Re-read the contract. Double-check the meeting time. These are things you should be doing anyway.

How to check if your planets are retrograde

On Trunaksh, make your kundli and look at the planet table. Retrograde planets are marked. If you see Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus or Mars listed as retrograde, that tells you the planet was moving backwards in the sky when you were born. It does not mean something is broken in your chart. It means that planet works differently for you — quieter on the outside, stronger on the inside.
