Two different signs

You actually have both a Sun sign and a Moon sign. They come from two different things in the sky.

  • Sun sign: the sign the Sun was in on your birthday. The Sun stays in each sign for about a month, so your birthday is enough to know it.
  • Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon moves much faster. It changes sign every two to two and a half days. To know it, you need your exact date, and sometimes your time too.

So if an app only asked for your birthday, it gave you your Sun sign. A kundli gives you your Moon sign. In India, that is what "rashi" means.

Why Indian astrology uses the Moon

In Vedic astrology, the Moon stands for your mind, your feelings and your moods. It is treated as more personal than the Sun. That is why:

  • Your name letters (namakshar) often come from the Moon's nakshatra.
  • Your dasha, the chapters of your life, starts from the Moon.
  • Daily predictions in Indian almanacs are read from your Moon sign.

A second reason: two different zodiacs

There is one more thing. Western astrology and Indian astrology measure the signs from different starting points.

  • Western astrology ties the signs to the seasons. Aries always starts on the first day of spring.
  • Indian astrology ties the signs to the actual stars.

Over hundreds of years, these two have slowly drifted apart. Today the gap is about 24 degrees, which is almost one whole sign. So even your Sun sign is often one sign earlier in Indian astrology. If you were always told you are a Leo, your Indian Sun sign may well be Cancer.

The 12 rashis and their English names

  • Mesh: Aries
  • Vrishabh: Taurus
  • Mithun: Gemini
  • Kark: Cancer
  • Simha: Leo
  • Kanya: Virgo
  • Tula: Libra
  • Vrishchik: Scorpio
  • Dhanu: Sagittarius
  • Makar: Capricorn
  • Kumbh: Aquarius
  • Meen: Pisces

So which one is the real me?

Both are real. They just describe different things. Your Sun sign is about your sense of self. Your Moon sign is about your mind and feelings. When an Indian astrologer, a priest or your family talks about your rashi, they mean your Moon sign.

How to find your real rashi

Enter your date, time and place of birth on Trunaksh. Your rashi shows at the top of your kundli, next to your lagna and nakshatra. If you don't know your birth time, your rashi is usually still right. It only changes if the Moon moved into a new sign on the day you were born.
